HOME UNITED EMERGED CHAMPION IN NBL DIVISION 1 (MEN) 2005

The strong and well-prepared Home United Basketball Club (Home United) at the Grand Final of the 47th National Basketball League (2005) Men Division 1, beat last year runner-up Eng Tat Hornets with a score 79 - 55 and emerged as the Champion of NBL , the top league in local basketball, for the second consecutive year.

This is the second time Home United had beaten Eng Tat. On 6 Mar 05, the Protectors beat Eng Tat with a score of 64 - 54, a margin of 10 points. Last night, the 1800-strong spectators might want to see the hard-fight between the two teams but such situation did not appear. Nonetheless, the spectators were impressed with the strong team work and superb skill demonstrated by Home United.

Home United started cautiously and constantly give pressure to the opponent without giving chance for any hit back. The only good performance by the opponent was 1 minute before the 1st quarter where Chia Tat Hong , Fu Wee Qiang and Ching Rong Lie together scored a total of 6 points narrowing the gap of the Home United's lead. The first quarter ended with a score of 19 - 11 in favour of Home United. Home United continued to put pressure on their defence and put up with fast offensive tactics. The score margin was narrowed to 10 points in the third quarter once. However, Eng Tat's defence was totally destroyed when the two 3-pointers made by Chua Boon Heng and one 3-pointer by Jason Tan and followed by 2 points made by Koong Kum Hoong ; this 11-point add-on made the score margin to 19 points before the 3 quarter ended. In the fourth quarter, Eng Tat could only tag along and not able to make a return. The fourth quarter ended with a score 79 - 55. Home United won with a 24-point margin and emerged as the Champion of the NBL in the second consecutive year.

In the score table, Home United Captain No. 10 Koh Meng Koon scored a high of 18 points while his peers Shanmugadas and Koong Kum Hoong each topped 15 points.

Team Manager, Soh Wan Khuan expressed "All the players had put in their best effort to attain the victory. Our plan to Shanghai is worthwhile and timely. They had played well and executed effectively on the court according to the coach's instructions. We had learned from our last year experience that we should not be lax and allow any opportunity for the opponent to make a hit back. We did it well this time and from the beginning till the end of the game."

The Guest-of-Honour, Mr Heng Chee How, Minster of State for Trade and Industry & Mayor of Central Singapore CDC gave away the prizes and certificates of selection to the 21 short listed- player for the National Squad 2005. Home United had three players on the list i.e. Koh Meng Koon, Shanmugadas and Wang Wei Zhi.

A small celebration was held after the match. Chairman SAC Tan Puay Kern commended the officials, coaches and players for their hard work and outstanding performance in achieving the NBL Div 1 title for the second time. He hoped that Home United would continue to be the Champs for many more years. He confirmed the trip to Shanghai and reminded the need to raise the necessary fund. All players were granted a big-packet performance bonus which was much more than that of last year. All players leaving the dinner with bright smiles on their faces. Home United ! Let's work harder to raise the flag even higher!!
