Chairman
of Home United Basketball Club (HUBC), SAC Tan Puay Kern of the
Singapore Police Force (SPF) chaired HUBC’s second Annual General Meeting on 29 March 2005 at the SPANS-JOM Clubhouse.
Since
HUBC was formed five years ago, it had maintained a sturdy course
of success and a review on 2004 saw no difference. HUBC has performed
very well in the National Basketball League (NBL) in both the
Men and Women categories. The Men’s Team is the top local basketball team, having emerged champion in the NBL Division
One Tournament while the Women’s Team attained second runners-up position in the Women NBL.
The newly formed Youth Women’s
Team which comprised of 21 members also participated in the MILO Youth Championship
2004. Another new addition to the club, the Youth Men’s Team, was formed with twenty boys being selected to undergo training.
In the forthcoming December school holidays, HUBC will organise a Youth Training
Programme to promote the sports as well as act as an outreach to more youths
in Singapore . Plans to organise a Youth Women Invitational Tournament for girls
below the age of 18 years in the same month is also on the agenda.

United Basketball Club Reaches Out to Nurture Youth Talents
They
came from various secondary schools, with different personalities
and backgrounds. But they have one thing in common to share – their passion for Basketball. In their December holiday in 2004, these youths
were given a chance to share the common passion and become a
better player courtesy of Singapore Pools and Home United Basketball
Club (HUBC). The Pools Youth Cup (Women) Championship 2004 was
held on 18 December 2004 at the Singapore American School (SAS).
Basketball teams from various secondary schools participated
in the competition to pit their skills for the top prize. Where
competitions are concerned, it had to be down to the top two
teams of the tournament to battle it out for the coveted Championship
title. The final showdown was between Anderson Secondary School
and the host themselves, SAS.
Proving too strong for the Anderson girls to handle, the girls from SAS took
the home ground advantage in their stride and walked out of the tournament
as champions of the Pools Youth Cup. The champions received their trophies
from the Guest-of-Honour for the tournament, Director of Corporate Communications
for Singapore Pools, Miss Juliana Sim.
While
the girls had enjoyed their share of the basketball affair, a
mix of boys and girls from other secondary schools enrolled themselves
in a training camp organised by HUBC at the Singapore Police
Association for National Servicemen (SPANS) from 27 to 30 December
2004. The finale on 30 December 2004 proved that the boys and
girls who attended the HUBC camp had dramatically improved in
their skills for the game. With swift layouts and breakaway counter-attacking
plays, it was a day filled with awe for those present to watch.
An
All-Star match was the grand highlight of the camp as the HUBC
team faced off with the top selection of youths from the camp.
It was definitely a day to remember for the selected boys to
play with the players from the top flight.
The
youths from both the Pools Youth Cup and the HUBC Youth Training
Camp thoroughly enjoyed themselves, making new friends along
the way and improving their skills for the game.
HUBC
(Youth) Team Debuts MILO Junior 2004 Basketball Championships
The
HUBC Women Youth team was formed in April 2004 and it made its
debut at the MILO Junior 2004 Basketball Championship. The team
had approximately 2 month of preparation time for the MILO Cup
which commenced in June 2004.
Under
the experience coaching of Tay Lay Leng, the team performed outstandingly
in all its matches and has successfully qualified for the 2nd
round of the MILO Cup. In the Quarter-Final, the HUBC team managed
to ease past Kai Xuan but lost to Combined School Red and T-Net
Club. The last match with T-Net Club was closely matched, being
tied at the end of the game. However, the HUBC team was ousted
during the overtime by a narrow margin of 2 points.
With
the team's passion and perseverance, we are confident that the
girls will continue with their excellent performance, yielding
a better result in 2005. Well done, girls!
