The Home United Basketball Club (HUBC) celebration dinner was held on 5 May 2005 at Qian Xi Restaurant located in the Civil Service Club. It was attended by Guest of Honour, Mr Tan Guong Ching, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs.

It was a jovial event as the HUBC had a lot to celebrate. Their men’s team had come in first in the National Basketball League Division 1 championships (see previous article) for the second year running. Prior to this, victory had eluded the HUBC team, with them placing second and third in 2002 and 2001 respectively.

The HUBC team, a re-incarnation of the formally formidable Police basketball team, seeks to recapture the glory of the powerful Police dominance of the basketball scene in the 1970s and 1980s.

“We tried to resurrect the Police team in the early 90s, but somehow, we could not make any headway in the local league,” shared Chairman HUBC, Mr Tan Puay Kern in his thank-you speech. “Eventually, we concluded that the best way was to leverage on the strengths of the entire Home Team and form a Home United Basketball Team.”

Backing this dream are main sponsors Fila and the Singapore Buddhist Lodge, whose representatives were present that night to receive certificates of appreciation.

A video show, aptly titled “Road to Victory” was also screened that night, chronicling the team’s journey through the 2005 NBL Division 1 season.

The night of celebrations came to a close with the HUBC players in high spirits looking forward to the coming year, and hopefully, victory again.
